Seed Production in PT. BISI International, Tbk.

Variety Release is regulated in Agriculture Ministry Regulation No. 38/Permentan/OT.140/7/2011. While the so-called horticulture seed, or seed is plant or part of plant which is used for plant multiplication. Here in BISI, seeds are produced through breeding program.

Firstly, the breeder got the information from Marketing Development (MD) about the product's specification: plant and the economic part. The general needs are: disease tolerance, high productivity and easy to cultivate. Sometimes MD bring the sample of seed that has large market in some areas, both in Indonesia or outside. After that, the breeder should check the germplasm stock to generate the aimed combination. They can also improve the existing product. The important thing is the new variety should be BUSS: Baru (new), Unik (unique), Seragam (uniform), and Stabil (stable). Therefore, it should be able to differ from the existed one. Breeder arrange for variety improvement program. While, the produced variety could be Hybrid or Open Pollinated.

Secondly, if the proposal is approved, the breeder will start to generate for the lines. They can generate it through recombination, selection (Selfing plant 1 - 3), back cross and stress tolerance. Breeder can pure the lines while the combination are created (Selfing plant 4 -10).  Here Foundation Seed (FS) as hybrid parental seeds are produced, while for the Open Pollinated variety, the parental seed is called Breeder Seed (BS).

The procedures and then continued with screening, retest, and advanced test. After all, the selected variety brought to the variety registration to government. As BISI has its own license, BISI do not need to make partnership to any university or institution to release the new variety. The new variety should be registered to the variety protection, so the new one will be claimed belong to BISI. BISI can release the new variety without registering it first, but other company can claim the variety to their own. That’s why, before releasing the seed, we have to register it to make a claim.
