Working in Private Seed Company

What's your consideration when you have to decide the place you will work? Everybody wish to get job in big company so that they can earn the high salary, build large network and find the life coach (hehehe). Focused on seed company, it’s a dilemmatic option. As far as I know, Indonesia owe only one big seed company who run their activities abroad, while the others belong to developed countries: Switzerland, France, USA, Netherlands, etc. 

Seed company produces new variety, generates new combinations fit to national and international market. Genetic variability becomes important assets for their product. Plant as much grown in tropical region, makes Indonesia rich of plant genetic variability. As you have already known about what already happened in hundred years ago how foreigner came to Indonesian and exploit

natural resources in Indonesia. This is also happening right now: foreign investors coming to Indonesia to build private agribusiness company. They exploit our genetic resources and claim themselves as the inventor and owner of that findings.

A story from my coworker made me so much furious. I don’t know exactly when this was happened. It was the story about Indonesian student in PhD program who his research was financed by Netherland seed company that run their business in Indonesia. His research was about hot pepper exploration in Indonesia. So that the student do travelling around Indonesia to find genetic diversity. The worst thing was the whole material found was collected and claimed by the company as it belong to them: Netherlands company. 

Another story from my boss, the ex-worker, Korean nationality, worked here for individual profit. He came here brought the promising and elite lines from his previous company. He was the breeder of hot pepper. He worked here for about 8 years and generated some good combinations of F1 (hybrid). But he insisted to register the lines in variety protection. The manager didn’t mind about that. But finally, when he completed his contract, he brought the all lines he has and even he tried to stole other lines from his coworker. Guess what he was going to do with those lines? Well, this part really got me mad: he built his own company in China by using the material from BISI. And after the stories happened, my company was cautious to employee from foreign. 

They realize about the wealth of Indonesia. Moreover the characters of Indonesian people lead them confidents to come and build seed company in Indonesia. This really break my heart. Wondering the colonist come and exploit and hide their big laughter to my country for this carelessness and laziness. Yeah I said careless and laziness. Indonesian people ain't stupid. 

Choosing seed company to work is dilemmatic. In multinational seed company, which many of them are foreign company will make our country to loss of genetic diversity but working in national company which many of them are have yet to grow great so that we find its difficult to progress and low salary. Please we need help from all part of this nation, especially from our government for the sake of Indonesia.
